Orbán says Ukraine and Hungary may sign global cooperation agreement
Hungary wants to sign a global cooperation agreement with Ukraine. The document will regulate relations between the two countries, says Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán at a joint press conference with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
"We are trying to close all previous disputes and focus on the future. We want to establish relations between our countries. We want to sign a global cooperation agreement with Ukraine, similar to the agreements we have with our other neighboring countries," Orbán said.
He added that Budapest would participate in the future modernization of Ukraine's economy, according to its capabilities.
Today's dialogue should become the basis for a future bilateral document. It will regulate relations between the countries and may be based on a mirror approach to bilateral relations between Ukraine and Hungary.
Relations between Ukraine and Hungary
Relations between the two countries are currently not at their best. There are several reasons for this, namely the language issue and Hungary's position on the war.
Although Budapest has condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine, it continues to cooperate with the Kremlin and constantly calls on Kyiv to hold peace talks with Moscow.
Hungarian officials have repeatedly made discrediting statements about Ukraine.
Today Orbán arrived in Kyiv for the first time since the beginning of the full-scale war. His trip is connected with Budapest's presidency in the EU Council.
