The sixth day of the Winter Olympics in Italy brought Ukraine a new national record in luge, but it was also marked by a high-profile skeleton controversy and defeats in several skiing events.

Here's a full report on the Olympic winners and the medal standings.

Sweden’s triumph and favorites’ setbacks in curling

In the women’s curling tournament, the second session of the group stage concluded. Sweden took sole leadership in the standings after convincingly defeating the US team.

Meanwhile, South Korea left no chance for Italy, and Denmark narrowly defeated Japan in an extra end.

Match results – February 12:

  • Italy 2 – 7 South Korea;
  • China 7 – 4 Great Britain;
  • Denmark 10 – 7 Japan;
  • Sweden 9 – 4 US.

Currently, the Swedish women’s team has two wins in two matches. Following them are Canada, China, and Switzerland, all of which remain undefeated so far.

Historic achievement in luge and setbacks in alpine skiing

The Ukrainian team - composed of Yuliana Tunytska, Ihor Hoi, Nazarii Kachmar, Andrii Mandzii, Olena Stetskiv, and Oleksandra Mokh - achieved the best result in Ukraine’s history in the mixed team luge relay.

The team finished in sixth place overall, while Germany won the gold medal in this discipline.

In women’s super-G (alpine skiing), Anastasiia Shepilenko did not complete the course, failing to reach the finish line.

In the 10 km cross-country skiing race, Daryna Mihal was the top Ukrainian, finishing 65th, while her teammates placed even lower.

Disqualification of Vladyslav Heraskevych

The main scandal of the day involved Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych.

The athlete was suspended from competition and disqualified due to the design of his helmet.

His protective gear featured photographs of athletes who died as a result of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The organizers deemed the memorial helmet a political statement, which is prohibited under the Olympic Charter.

In the overall medal standings, Norway is dominating with seven gold medals. Ukraine has not yet won any medals at these Games.

Earlier, we reported on the individuals depicted on Heraskevych’s helmet, which the IOC banned.
