The fourth day of the Winter Games was marked by an incredible breakthrough by Ukrainian figure skater Kyrylo Marsak, a patriotic gesture in luge, and Norway strengthening its position in the overall medal standings.

RBC-Ukraine reports on the Olympic triumphs and the current medal table situation.

Kyrylo Marsak’s breakthrough skate

The biggest sensation on Tuesday was Ukrainian figure skater Kyrylo Marsak’s performance in the short program.

The athlete delivered the best skate of his career, receiving 86.89 points from the judges.

Marsak beat his previous personal best, set at the European Championships in January, by almost 10 points.

This result allowed the Ukrainian to qualify early for the free skate, where the top 24 athletes will compete.

Marsak’s next performance will take place on Friday, February 13.

The skater said such a high score was a surprise even for his team, and the incredible support from fans with Ukrainian flags helped him cope with nerves.

Luge: best result in 16 years and a ‘manifest of memory’

In women’s singles luge, Ukraine showed progress fans had been waiting for since 2010.

Yulianna Tunytska finished 18th, while debutant Olena Smaga placed 20th.

For the first time in a long period, two Ukrainian athletes finished in the Olympic top 20.

Besides sports results, attention was also drawn to Olena Smaga’s civic stance.

The athlete publicly supported Vladyslav Heraskevych, whom the IOC banned from using a helmet featuring images of fallen athlete-soldiers.

Smaga stressed that remembering war victims is not politics, and her gesture was an act of solidarity with the skeleton athlete’s team.

Medal table: Norway’s dominance

After ten medal events decided during the day, Norway took the lead in the standings.

The Scandinavian team won three gold medals in its key disciplines — biathlon, cross-country skiing, and freestyle. They now have six gold medals in total.

Germany and Sweden are trying to challenge the leader, each with three gold medals. As of the evening of February 10, Ukraine remains without medals.
