Number of Ukrainian children with PTSD - Shocking statistic

Today, Ukrainians are paying more attention to their mental health. However, Russian aggression has led to 44% of children in Ukraine showing signs of potential PTSD. This was reported by Ukraine's First Lady, Olena Zelenska, during the educational conference "August-2025: Education for Changing World."
How children's emotional state affects their learning
Zelenska reminded: "When we talk about our children, their emotional state also significantly affects their learning."
"As research shows (Child Wellbeing in Ukraine 'Index of the Future' – Ed.), unfortunately, 44% of children in Ukraine show signs of potential PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder – Ed.)," shared the First Lady.

According to her, this means that children:
- Have difficulty concentrating;
- Get upset easily;
- Get into fights;
- Feel lonely;
- Have trouble sleeping.
"I think you are well aware of all this," Zelenska noted, addressing the audience.
How schools can help children during the war
The First Lady thanked all Ukrainian adults and educators.
"For your patience and understanding in working with our children, who are experiencing potentially traumatic experiences due to the Russian attack," Zelenska emphasized.
She noted that since 2022, she has supported the nationwide mental health program "You as?"
"And I hope that in your educational institutions it is also starting to take root and develop," added the First Lady.
According to her, the program focuses on "social-emotional learning, lessons, workshops… communication, conflict resolution, anti-bullying initiatives, and support for inclusivity."
"All of this is about understanding your own emotions, understanding the emotions of others, supporting yourself and others in difficult times. It is right for the school to become a source of this knowledge," Zelenska concluded.
