Russia has deported more than 19,500 children from Ukraine during the 1,000 days of the full-scale war. Only 1,012 young Ukrainians have managed to return home, Dmytro Lubinets, Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, reports.

According to confirmed data, since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine:

  • 592 children have been killed;
  • 1,702 have been injured;
  • 1,934 are considered missing;
  • 19,546 have been deported or forcibly displaced.

Lubinets also stated that thanks to efforts by government agencies, international partners, and non-government organizations, approximately 1,012 children were returned from the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine and Russia.

Furthermore, the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights reminded that today, November 20, the world marks Children's Day. On this day, the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Deportation of Ukrainian children

According to Lubinets, there is a risk of deportation of approximately 1.5 million Ukrainian children from the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. Ukrainian Ombudsman noted that returning the children is a complicated process, as Russia refuses to cooperate, and each case is handled individually.

In addition, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant in 2022 for Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and the Russian Ombudsman in relation to the deportation of Ukrainian children.
