US-Canada border sees surge in smuggling and illegal crossings: AI can address it

The number of illegal crossings and smuggling cases at the US-Canada border has skyrocketed. Experts are suggesting the use of artificial intelligence to address the problem, reports Fox News.
The northern border of the US is experiencing a sharp increase in illegal crossings, drug smuggling, and encounters with individuals on the terrorist watch list.
According to Jon Brewton, founder of Data2 and US Air Force veteran, the northern border is twice as long as the southern one, making it harder to control.
According to US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the Swanton Sector, which covers 295 miles of the border with Canada, recorded more than 15,000 apprehensions in the first 10 months of 2024 - 14 times more than the entire previous year.
How AI can strengthen border security
Jon Brewton believes that artificial intelligence could be an effective solution to enhance security at the northern border.
Instead of increasing the number of border agents and building physical barriers, he suggests using smart technologies for monitoring and data analysis through radar systems and cameras.
"Using AI not only helps to quickly detect suspicious behavior but also combines data from various sources to create a comprehensive picture of the situation," Brewton explains. He also notes that modern systems minimize privacy intrusion by focusing on real threats rather than general surveillance.
Canada's involvement
The Trump administration is pressuring Canada to tighten border control to reduce migrant flows and drug smuggling.
In response, tariffs have been imposed: 25% on Canadian imports and 10% on energy resources.
Experts believe that joint efforts with Canada and the implementation of AI technologies can help stabilize the situation at the northern border.
