North Korean soldiers thought they went to military training, not war - South Korean ambassador
North Korean soldiers allegedly did not know that they were being sent to Russia to fight against Ukraine. They believed they were going for military training, the South Korean Ambassador to the UN, Hwang Joon-kook, reports.
According to Hwang Joon-kook, the North Korean soldiers did not know they had been sent to fight against Ukraine; instead, they were told they would participate in combat simulation drills. The South Korean Ambassador believes that the two North Korean soldiers captured by Ukraine were unaware that they had been sent to fight against Ukraine.
"Russia and North Korea still refuse to acknowledge the dispatch of North Korean soldiers and falsely claim that the military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang is in full compliance with obligations under international law," said Hwang Jun-kook.
North Korean soldiers' involvement in war against Ukraine
Last year, Kim Jong-Un sent North Korean soldiers to assist Russia in the war against Ukraine. The Russians have been using allied troops to "liberate" the Kursk region from the Ukrainian Armed Forces. According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russia lost up to a battalion of North Korean soldiers in the Kursk region in just two days.
As of January 11, two North Korean soldiers were captured by Ukrainian forces.
