Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi begins a hunger strike in an Iranian prison, reports CNN.

One of the bravest women of our time, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, has begun a desperate struggle for her life behind the walls of an Iranian prison. Her condition is critical, and all contact with her has been completely cut off.

Desperate protest behind bars

On Monday, Narges Mohammadi officially announced a hunger strike. This was reported by her foundation in Paris in an exclusive statement to CNN. The move is a protest against the illegal detention and inhumane conditions faced by hundreds of political prisoners in Iran.

The human rights activist’s son, Ali Rahmani, has called what is happening to his mother a crime against humanity. According to him, the regime is trying to break a woman who has devoted her entire life to peace and human rights.

Critical condition and isolation

The situation surrounding Mohammadi resembles a thriller with a tragic ending:

  • Medical catastrophe: Narges is suffering from serious heart problems (she has survived several attacks), spinal issues, and critically high blood pressure. She recently underwent surgery due to a suspected cancer diagnosis.
  • Complete silence: Since her arrest in December, the human rights activist has been allowed only one call to her brother. Authorities demand that she lie to her family about her condition, but Narges chooses the truth — and remains in silence and isolation.
  • Return to hell: Mohammadi was arrested during a memorial ceremony. She now faces a total of 36 years in prison for propaganda.

Why the regime fears her

The laureate’s husband, Taghi Rahmani, believes the authorities fear Narges’s voice more than any sanctions. Even from prison, she remains a symbol of the fight for women’s rights and democracy in Iran.

The international community and human rights organizations are calling for immediate intervention. Every hour of hunger striking for a woman with her medical history could be fatal.

US–Iran relations

Tensions between Iran and the United States sharply increased after Tehran violently suppressed anti-government protests in early January. According to human rights organizations, thousands of people were killed during the demonstrations.

US President Donald Trump instructed his team to prepare scenarios for rapid and decisive strikes against Iran, intended to demonstrate strength without drawing the US into a prolonged war in the Middle East.

Additionally, the US recently deployed an additional warship to the Middle East in response to the escalating tensions with Iran.
