No shutdown in USA - House of Representatives passed budget without funds for Ukraine
The U.S. House of Representatives has approved temporary government funding, allowing them to avoid a government shutdown, according to The Washington Post.
The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a resolution to extend government funding for 45 days. The result was 335 votes in favor, with one Democrat and 91 Republicans voting against the bill.
The short-term funding bill includes assistance for natural disasters and the extension of the federal flood insurance program but does not include aid for Ukraine.
Now the Senate must approve the bill by 12:01 AM Sunday (19:01 Kyiv time) to prevent a government shutdown.
Why was there a threat of a shutdown
The threat of a government shutdown is related to the position of far-right Republicans who were blocking the passage of budget bills for the next fiscal year, demanding cuts they deemed excessive.
Among other issues, they opposed additional aid to Ukraine. Until the last moment, the White House was trying to include at least a compromise of $6 billion for Ukraine by mid-November, but the initiative failed to gain enough votes.
The Biden administration is seeking approval for a package totaling over $40 billion, with approximately $24 billion allocated to Ukraine.
