No fear of Trump in Poland: Expert explains Warsaw's expectations
Poland hopes that newly elected US President Donald Trump can improve the situation for Ukraine, says Lukasz Adamski, Deputy Director of the Juliusz Mieroszewski Dialogue Center, in a comment to RBC-Ukraine.
"In Poland, unlike Western Europe, there is no fear over Trump's return to power. Instead, there is a certain hope that he might somehow shift the situation in Ukraine's favor," Adamski stated.
According to him, the real challenge would be if Trump decided to hold a second Yalta Conference at the expense of Ukraine. To recall, the Yalta Conference took place in February 1945 after World War II, when the leaders of the USSR, the US, and the UK divided spheres of influence in Europe.
"Fortunately, I think we are far from such a scenario. However, if it happened, it would be a challenge for Poland, how to respond. Any agreements in the 'Yalta' style threaten not only Ukraine but also Poland, as they signal that the views of small and medium-sized states are disregarded, and the world reverts to a concert of major powers," Adamski added.
Earlier, Donald Trump made skeptical remarks regarding US support for Ukraine during his campaign. European capitals fear his return to the White House could lead to the immediate cessation of American assistance to Ukraine.
Ukrainians' attitude towards Poland significantly worsened after Polish carriers conducted a blockade of several border checkpoints with Ukraine from early November 2023 until mid-January 2024. In addition, at the beginning of 2024, Polish farmers also blocked the border.
The border blockade inevitably affected public opinion. In January 2024, less than half of Ukrainians maintained a positive attitude toward the Polish people.
