New study reveals secret to burning more calories during workouts
During physical exercises, you can burn even more calories by following one important rule that will help with weight loss, according to a new study in Proceedings of the Royal Society B
What rule helps burn more calories during workouts
Recently, researchers discovered that taking breaks during a walk burns more calories than continuous movement from start to finish.
In the study, scientists measured the oxygen consumption and energy needs of participants walking on a treadmill and using stairs. Ten volunteers took part in the experiment. They performed exercises at three different speeds, with intervals ranging from 10 seconds to four minutes while being observed.
The scientists recorded each participant's oxygen consumption and metabolic needs for each interval. The tests showed that climbing or walking with intervals of 10 to 30 seconds required 60% more oxygen than covering the same distance without stopping.
Francesco Luciano, the study author, explained that when people take shorter steps, they expend more energy and consume more oxygen to cover the same distance, comparing it to a car that consumes more fuel in the first few kilometers than later on.
It turns out that the body requires more energy to warm up at the beginning of each walk and less once it is already in motion.
Why even small walks are beneficial
The health benefits of daily walking are well established. It promotes digestion and improves mood.
Walking serves as an alternative to running or other high-intensity exercises with low impact.
It is effective, accessible, and can help you live a long and healthy life.
Recent research shows that walking 5,000 steps three times a week for two years can increase a person's life expectancy by three years and reduce healthcare costs by up to 13%.
