Smoke over the port after the strike
Satellite imagery shows significant smoke in the area of St. Petersburg's port.
The plume rose over the territory after Ukrainian drones reached the oil terminal.
International media outlets noted that the strike hit one of the key infrastructure facilities in northwestern Russia.
Facilities near Kronstadt were also targeted
According to Reuters and AP, Ukrainian forces also struck infrastructure in the Kronstadt area. The targets were facilities linked to Russia's military sector.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the targets hit were connected to the functioning of Russia's military machine.
Strikes cast a shadow over Putin's economic forum
The strike took place on the opening day of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
The event is traditionally regarded as one of the key platforms where Russian authorities showcase the country's economic potential.
This year, however, the forum was accompanied by reports of the attack, smoke over the city, and discussions about the effectiveness of Russia's air defense system.
As previously reported, Commander of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces Robert Brovdi, known by the call sign "Madyar," commented on the overnight drone strike on the oil terminal in St. Petersburg.
