The European Union's new 18th package of sanctions against Russia could be approved soon. The package had been blocked by Slovakia, but it appears that an agreement has now been reached with Bratislava, according to a post by Radio Free Europe correspondent Rikard Jozwiak.

According to the journalist’s sources, the EU managed to reach a deal with Slovakia, which had demanded that its needs be taken into account during the process of phasing out Russian energy, a key element of the new sanctions package.

"Seems like Slovakia got the reassurances it needed from the European Commission today on the phasing out of Russian energy by end of 2027. Could lead to the approval of the next sanctions package (the 18th) on Russia soon," Jozwiak's post says.

Sanctions against Russia: 18th package

At the summit in late June, the European Union failed to adopt its 18th package of sanctions against Russia due to Slovakia’s veto. The package targets Moscow’s energy revenues, banks, and military industry.

Germany recently urged the US and EU countries to support the 18th sanctions package, stating it would be a strong show of support for Ukraine. On July 3, the European Commission also called for increased pressure on Russia, warning that the Russian economy is already overheating.
