New earthquake hits Russia, this time in Dagestan

A powerful earthquake struck the Caspian Sea, with the strongest tremors felt by residents of Dagestan and neighboring regions, according to Russian social media channels.
The earthquake occurred around 23:30. Tremors were felt by residents of Makhachkala, Derbent, Kaspiysk and Khasavyurt, as well as in Chechnya, Astrakhan, Pyatigorsk, Kislovodsk, Aktau and Azerbaijan.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the epicenter was located in the Caspian Sea, 28 km east of Izberbash, at a depth of 10 km.
At least one thousand residents of Makhachkala went outside fearing aftershocks, SHOT channel reported.
There have been no reports of damage or casualties so far. Local authorities and rescue services are checking the situation.
Strongest earthquakes in Russia and worldwide
Last week, a powerful earthquake was recorded at Ukraine’s Antarctic station Akademik Vernadsky in the Drake Passage between South America and Antarctica. The tremors measured magnitude 7 and were classified as destructive.
The previous major earthquake in Russia struck on July 30 on the Kamchatka Peninsula. The tremors reached magnitude 8, the strongest in the region since 1952.
On August 17, 2024, Kamchatka was again hit by a magnitude 7.2 quake, followed by an eruption of the Shiveluch volcano, which sent ash up to 8 kilometers into the sky.
