New fighting broke out on the volatile border between Pakistan and Afghanistan on Wednesday, leaving more than a dozen civilians and soldiers dead, Reuters reported.

The latest clashes were reported to be the deadliest between the neighbors since the Taliban took power in Kabul in 2021.

The Afghan Taliban said that more than a dozen of its civilians were killed and 100 were wounded. The group claimed this happened when Pakistani forces launched attacks early Wednesday morning in the Spin Boldak area.

Meanwhile, Pakistan said that four of its civilians were injured as a result of Taliban attacks in the Chaman area, located across the border from Spin Boldak.

This also led to fighting between troops and militants in another incident. In Pakistan's Orakzai border district, six Pakistani soldiers were killed and six wounded.

According to Reuters, nine militants were also killed.

Conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan

The conflict erupted amid US discussions about a possible return of troops to Afghanistan. According to US President Donald Trump, Washington seeks to regain control of the Bagram air base, which is strategically important in the region.

In response, Taliban Foreign Ministry representative Zakir Jalal stated that the movement would not allow the US to reestablish control over the key military base.
