Never mix these medicines with coffee for your health's sake
Coffee is a strong stimulant, so combining it with certain medications can lead to overstimulation and unpleasant symptoms. Additionally, this beverage can interfere with the body's absorption of medications, according to Health.
Medications for thyroid gland
For hypothyroidism, patients are prescribed medications for the thyroid gland to help balance their hormones. Research indicates that consuming coffee simultaneously with thyroid medications may reduce the concentration of drugs in the body, consequently diminishing the therapeutic effect. Medical reports suggest that this effect is halved.
Cold and allergy medications
Coffee is a stimulant, so combining it with allergy medications may trigger unpleasant symptoms such as restlessness and insomnia. Therefore, before taking allergy or cold medications, it is advisable to consult with a family doctor to determine whether these remedies can be combined with coffee.
Diabetes medications
Mixing coffee with sugar or milk can lead to a spike in blood sugar levels and affect the effectiveness of diabetes medications. Additionally, studies show that caffeine may worsen symptoms in people with diabetes.
Alzheimer's medications
Caffeine affects medications for Alzheimer's disease. Caffeine strengthens the blood-brain barrier and may reduce the amount of the drug that reaches the brain. Medications for Alzheimer's disease work by protecting the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, and it has been shown that consuming a large amount of coffee worsens this protective effect.
Asthma medications
Consuming coffee or other beverages with high caffeine content may increase the risk of side effects from medications prescribed for asthma treatment. Coffee can also decrease the absorption of drugs in the body.
Osteoporosis medications
Osteoporosis medications should not be taken simultaneously with coffee, as it reduces the effectiveness of the drug. It is recommended to take these medications before eating or drinking anything, and to swallow the tablets only with plain water. When you drink coffee with these types of medications, their effectiveness may be reduced by more than half.
Blood pressure medications
Many people take medications for high blood pressure that slow down the heart rate. However, consuming coffee simultaneously with the intake of such medications may result in the body absorbing less of the drug. Therefore, it is advisable to consult with a doctor regarding the consumption of coffee and blood pressure medications.
