Netherlands names only condition under which Ukraine can use F-16 to strike Russian territory
The Netherlands allow Ukraine to use their F-16 fighter jets for strikes on military targets in Russia. The only condition of the country is compliance with international humanitarian law, according to the Minister of Defense of the Netherlands, Kajsa Ollongren, in an interview with Suspilne.
"F-16 is one type of weaponry. We also provide other weapons, and we have always said it is up to Ukraine to decide how to use them. You adhere to international humanitarian law. That's the only condition we set," said Ollongren.
She noted that exactly how to use the F-16 is a decision of the Ukrainian military.
"If you see targets outside Ukraine, but they need to be hit for defense, they are legitimate. I have always defended Ukraine's right to fight as it sees fit. I see more and more countries taking the same position now," the minister added.
Ollongren also mentioned that the first fighter jets will likely arrive in Ukraine this summer.
"First Danish, then Dutch. And then we will continue working like this - in batches," she added.
F-16 for Ukraine
Last year NATO countries decided to transfer F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine and train Ukrainian pilots.
The aircraft will be provided by Denmark, the Netherlands, and Belgium. In addition, the United States and several other countries have joined the training of Ukrainian pilots.
Recently, it became known that Danish F-16 fighters will soon be delivered to Ukraine.
