The United States, along with its partners, had planned to free the Russian "oppositionist" Alexei Navalny as part of a prisoner exchange agreement that was implemented today, August 1, according to a briefing by Jake Sullivan, the US National Security Advisor.

"We had been working with our partners on a deal that would have included Alexei Navalny, and unfortunately, he died," Sullivan said.

However, as Sullivan added, despite this, work on the prisoner exchange continued and was completed today.

Earlier, the late opposition figure's associate, Leonid Volkov, also reported that Navalny was planned to be released as part of the prisoner exchange.

Navalny's death was reported on February 16. The Russians claimed it was due to a blood clot.

What preceded

Today, August 1, a large-scale prisoner exchange took place between Russia, Germany, and the United States.

The aggressor country returned its killers, spies, and other criminals who had previously been imprisoned in Western countries, in exchange for political prisoners and illegally convicted Americans. The names of those involved in the exchange were reported by The Insider.

Additionally, as CNN reported, US Vice President Kamala Harris negotiated with Germany and Slovenia to make the agreement with Russia possible.
