NATO urges Romania to 'effectively respond' to Russian drone airspace violations
NATO has called on Romania to "effectively respond" to recent incidents involving violations of its airspace by Russian missiles and drones, says NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte during a press conference at a meeting of defense ministers.
Rutte emphasizes that air defense remains a top priority for the Alliance.
He reacted to the flights of Russian drones and missiles over Romania during the shelling of Ukraine. He called for a response to such incidents.
"Given Russia's war against Ukraine which has in multiple NATO airspace violations, including just yesterday in Romania. Let me express NATO's solidarity with Romania and also command the Romanian authorities for a quick and effective response to this incident," he said.
Russian drones in Romania
Kamikaze drones of Russia repeatedly violated the airspace of Romania during attacks on Ukraine, mostly when they tried to attack the Odesa region.
Romania has also found the wreckage of Russian drones on its territory. Budapest raises F-16 fighters for protection but does not shoot down the drones.
