NATO to purchase 155-mm shells worth €1.1 billion, including for Ukraine
NATO has signed a 1.1 billion euro contract for the supply of 155mm artillery ammunition, with a portion of the shells set to be delivered to Ukraine, according to Reuters.
"The war in Ukraine has become a battle of ammunition," NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters after a signing ceremony at the Western military alliance's headquarters in Brussels.
NATO negotiated the deal on behalf of several allies who will either transfer the munitions to Ukraine or use them to replenish their depleted stocks. Bulk purchases ensure lower prices.
The contract is likely to procure approximately 220,000 artillery rounds, with initial deliveries expected by the end of 2025, as reported by a NATO representative to Reuters.
According to industry sources, the ammunition will be supplied by the French arms manufacturer Nexter and the German company Junghans.
