NATO takes over coordination of military aid for Ukraine from US
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has now assumed responsibility for coordinating military aid to Ukraine from Western countries. Previously, this role was performed by the United States, according to Reuters.
According to an unnamed source, the NATO mission headquarters for Ukraine, named NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU), is fully operational. The headquarters is located on the premises of a US base in Wiesbaden, Germany.
However, the Reuters source did not clarify why the NATO mission headquarters began operating only now, despite being announced in the summer.
Journalists, citing diplomats, clarify that such a transfer of authority to NATO may have a limited effect. The US may still cut its aid to Ukraine after Trump's inauguration.
New NATO center to support Ukraine
In April 2022, it was reported that the US was establishing a command center in Germany to coordinate and optimize military aid to Ukraine.
However, prior to the US presidential elections, the responsibility for this coordination shifted to NATO, amid fears that Donald Trump could cut military support to Ukraine.
As of early December, the establishment of the new NATO command center for Ukraine was behind schedule. According to Bloomberg, the delay was due to the slow deployment of promised personnel by NATO countries.
