NATO warships began patrolling the Baltic Sea this week. Some of the ships are anchored in Tallinn's Mine Harbor, ERR reports.

Warships have begun patrolling as part of the Baltic Guard program.

Three NATO ships anchored in Tallinn. One of them is the Royal Netherlands Navy frigate Tromp, which leads the squadron. It is an anti-aircraft and anti-aircraft headquarters ship. In 2010, Tromp took part in an anti-piracy operation off the coast of Africa, during which an assault group sent from the ship attacked pirate ships three times.

There are two other NATO ships in the harbor near the Estonian capital - the German minesweeper Datteln and the hydrographic vessel Luymes with a mixed Dutch-Belgian crew.

The number of ships involved in patrolling the Baltic Sea has not been determined and will vary depending on the situation. The cooperation of the navies of Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia plays an important role in the Baltic Guard mission.

Damage to cables in the Baltic Sea

At the end of 2024, submarine communication cables between Finland and Estonia were damaged in the Baltic Sea. As part of the investigation, the Eagle S vessel was detained, which is part of the Russian Federation's "shadow fleet" of tankers.

Before that, two other data cables between Finland and Germany were severed. Among the suspects was the Chinese cargo ship Yi Peng 3 with a Russian captain.

After these incidents, it was proposed to launch a program to protect the Baltic Sea from threats from Russia.
