NATO prepares for reduced role of US in supporting Ukraine after elections - CNN
NATO officials have stated that they are preparing for a reduced role of the US, especially after the presidential elections, according to CNN.
"We can’t expect that the US will continue to take on an outsized burden in supporting Ukraine, which is why the Secretary General wants to see NATO leading on security assistance, rather than one ally taking that on," said a senior NATO official.
He also noted that Europe must step up even further.
According to the agency, a potential Trump victory has cast doubt on the future of US aid to Ukraine. Last month, the former president refused to say whether he wanted Ukraine to win the war and called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a "salesman" who "should never have let that war start."
"I’m very worried. Optimistic is not the word I would use to describe the situation in Ukraine right now,” said the NATO representative.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte recently stated that all NATO members have the desire and determination to provide Ukraine with everything necessary to continue its fight against Russian aggression.
