NATO has no reason to exist as it is now, says Italy's defense chief

Italy's Defense Minister Guido Crosetto sees no reason for NATO to exist in its current form. He said the US and Europe are no longer the center of the world, Sky tg24 reports.
"NATO no longer makes sense to exist in its current form. Once, the Atlantic Ocean was the center of the world, now it is the whole world. Once, the center was the US and Europe, but now there is everything else with which we need to build relationships," emphasized the Defense Minister.
Crosetto added that if NATO becomes an organization that takes on the task of ensuring peace by negotiating with southern countries of the world, "then the Alliance will become something completely different."
"Otherwise, we will not achieve the goal of ensuring security within the rules that apply to everyone," he noted.
Changes in NATO
NATO countries have been focusing on defense spending against the backdrop of Donald Trump's rise to power in the United States.
In particular, at the upcoming summit in The Hague, Secretary General Mark Rutte will propose a defense investment plan of 5% of GDP, which each member state will have to adhere to.
This plan was developed against the backdrop of Trump's demands to significantly increase defense spending.
In particular, 3.5% of the country's GDP will have to be allocated to basic defense spending, and 1.5% to investments in defense and security.
