NASA has released photos of astronauts testing spacesuits in the Arizona desert to use in a flight to the moon. However, many were skeptical about these spacesuits because they looked unsuitable for extraterrestrial use, reports Futurism.

What's wrong with the spacesuits

The space agency showed pictures of astronauts Kate Rubins and Andre Douglas performing tasks "on the Moon". They were half in space gear while half wearing fairly ordinary tourist clothes, including sunglasses.

People who saw the pictures from the test had absolutely logical questions: How we can use these suits in space if they have no sleeves?

"Field tests play a critical role in helping us test all of the systems, hardware, and technology we’ll need to conduct successful lunar operations during Artemis missions," said Barbara Janoiko, director for the field test. "Our engineering and science teams have worked together seamlessly to ensure we are prepared every step of the way for when astronauts step foot on the Moon again."

Probably, they use only mock-ups of the spacesuits during the test, or its first developments, which are not yet complete.

Published images suggest the astronauts are being prepared for geological research to conduct on the Moon.

"During Artemis III, the astronauts will be our science operators on the lunar surface with an entire science team supporting them from here on Earth," said NASA Goddard Space Flight Center science officer Cherie Achilles. "This simulation gives us an opportunity to practice conducting geology from afar in real time."

NASA also explains that the test will assess gaps and challenges associated with operations at the Moon's South Pole, including data collection and communication between the mission control team and the science team in Houston for rapid decision-making protocols.

"At the conclusion of each simulated moonwalk, the science team, flight control team, crewmembers, and field experts will come together to discuss and record lessons learned," the space bureau says.
