Mouthwash has long been advertised as an essential step in oral hygiene, but that’s not the case. Many people use it daily without even considering whether it’s necessary.
When mouthwash is actually needed in oral care was explained in an interview with RBC-Ukraine by dentist and chief physician Irina Pilkh, who has over 17 years of experience.
Is mouthwash essential in oral care
According to the specialist, mouthwash is not mandatory if you have no oral health issues. Doctors only recommend it for certain problems.
"If everything is fine - healthy mouth, no systemic gum issues - you can use it as needed. For example, sometimes you just want your breath to smell fresh," the dentist added. However, if there are inflammatory processes, it should only be used under a doctor’s guidance.
There are many types of mouthwash: some can be used daily, others for no more than two weeks. Some contain harmful ingredients that kill beneficial oral flora.
"It’s not okay when people boast about not brushing their teeth but just using mouthwash. It’s not a cure-all. The most important thing is the toothbrush, because mechanically removing food debris is key," Pilkh said.
Types of mouthwash
Cosmetic
The American Dental Association notes that this type of mouthwash freshens breath. It does not affect bacteria or treat diseases and is suitable only for temporary freshness.
Therapeutic
Contains active ingredients that help:
-
reduce dental plaque
-
control gingivitis or gum inflammation
-
decrease cavities
-
combat bad breath
Alcohol in mouthwash helps distribute active ingredients, but can dry out the mouth and cause discomfort, so it’s best to avoid it in the formulation.
