Moscow responds after Kazakh president Tokayev urges Putin to freeze war

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov says Russian President Vladimir Putin responded to Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's proposal to freeze the war in Ukraine. According to Peskov, it could happen before the end of the day—but only under one condition.
Kremlin spokesperson said that during today's meeting between representatives of the two countries, Vladimir Putin gave Tokayev a detailed briefing on the course of the war.
Asked how Putin reacted to Tokayev's proposal to freeze the war, Peskov said such a move would be impossible until Russia achieves its objectives.
He added that the fighting could stop as early as today if Ukraine made certain decisions.
"The freeze of the conflict in Ukraine proposed by Tokayev is impossible given Kyiv's stance. Russia's main condition is achievement of its goals. Everything could stop today, before the end of the day, if the Kyiv regime makes the appropriate decisions," Peskov noted.

Earlier today, Kazakh president Tokayev told Putin that many parties had approached him regarding mediation efforts, prompting him to propose freezing the war and returning to the Istanbul 2.0 talks, which he said had produced significant results.
Tokayev also echoed several narratives aligned with Moscow rhetoric. In particular, he described Ukrainians and Russians as brotherly peoples and claimed that the current war is benefiting Russia's adversaries.
