More Americans support quick end to Russia-Ukraine war, polls
As of today, nearly half of US citizens support providing military and financial assistance to Ukraine. However, a growing number of Americans favor ending the war as quickly as possible, according to Gallup.
According to the sixth sociological survey since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, 48% of respondents expressed support for continued assistance to Ukraine in reclaiming territories lost in the war with Russia. Meanwhile, 50% of respondents support a swift resolution to the conflict, even if it means Ukraine cannot regain all its lost territories. This figure has risen from 33% in August 2022.
These data indicate a shift in public opinion compared to previous surveys when most Americans supported fighting until a decisive victory.
Americans are also divided on whether the United States is doing too much (37%), enough (31%), or not enough (30%) to help Ukraine. Compared to March 2024, more respondents now believe the US is doing enough, while fewer think it is doing too little.
The Gallup Organization also noted significant differences in opinion between members of the two major US political parties. Republicans largely favor ending the war quickly and reducing support for Ukraine — a position that has increased by 20% since the last survey. In contrast, Democrats generally support ongoing involvement and maintaining current levels of assistance to Ukraine, with their support rising by 30% since the previous poll.
Additionally, 68% of surveyed Americans believe neither Ukraine nor Russia is currently winning the war. This sentiment is roughly consistent among Republicans, Democrats, and independent voters.
The poll was conducted from December 4 to December 15.
Public opinion on Russia-Ukraine war
According to a November Gallup survey, just over half of Ukrainians (52%) believe the country should pursue peace talks to end the war as soon as possible. Meanwhile, 38% supported continuing military efforts until victory is achieved.
However, another survey shows Ukrainians remain skeptical about negotiations with Russia and do not support concessions to the aggressor.
According to a survey conducted by Russia’s Levada Center, most Russians support the war against Ukraine. However, there has been a noted increase in those favoring peace negotiations.
