Minister of Finance on Ukraine's economy losses from Russian shelling of energy sector
Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy sector will lead to economic losses and a decrease in state budget revenues, according to Ukraine's Finance Minister Serhii Marchenko.
"Of course, the recent attacks on our energy infrastructure are not encouraging. The Ministry of Economy and the National Bank have already revised their GDP forecasts and believe that the loss could be up to one percent of GDP, partly as a result of these attacks," he said.
Marchenko said that this will also impact budget revenue figures.
"Disruptions in electricity supply can and will affect business operations, and naturally, we would like to minimize this impact," the minister added.
In March 2024, the Russian army resumed attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, causing a current shortage of electricity.
Due to these attacks, the National Bank of Ukraine downgraded its GDP growth forecast for 2024 from 3.6% to 3.0%. Additionally, the Ministry of Economy estimated economic growth in April at 4.3%, which is lower than the 4.6% growth in March.
