On Thursday, June 5, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will discuss a "fair ceasefire" in Ukraine with US President Donald Trump, reports The Guardian.

As the outlet states, Merz promised to make steadfast support for Ukraine a cornerstone of his government's policy, amid concerns over the United States' security commitments to Europe.

"The government’s objectives are clear and the chancellor will do everything in his power to lobby the US president for a fair ceasefire, including with the threat of sanctions," said an unnamed German government spokesperson.

Ceasefire on the frontline

In recent months, Russia has repeatedly initiated a so-called "silence regime" on the frontlines. However, Russian forces have never honored the ceasefires.

Today, June 2, the second round of negotiations between the Ukrainian and Russian delegations will take place in Istanbul. As noted in Moscow, they plan to present their vision of a ceasefire in a so-called "memorandum." The document is expected to be unveiled during the meeting of the negotiating teams.

Further details on the talks are available in the RBC-Ukraine coverage.
