President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz plan to discuss the fight against corruption in Ukraine with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Bild reports.

"Macron and the Chancellor (Friedrich Merz - ed.) have agreed to engage in intensive talks with the President of Ukraine regarding the fight against corruption," Stefan Kornelius, Spokesperson of the German government, stated, commenting on the meeting between Macron and Merz in Berlin.

According to Kornelius, the French President and the German Chancellor noted that Ukraine is currently undergoing an important turning point on its path toward membership in the European Union.

The German government spokesperson also said that Macron and Merz discussed the military situation in Ukraine and further military support.

Law on NABU and SAPO

On July 22, the Ukrainian parliament passed draft law No. 12414, which significantly changes the balance of power among anti-corruption bodies and strengthens the role of the Prosecutor General's Office in cases that were previously handled exclusively by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO).

Against this backdrop, protests took place in Kyiv and several other cities. Nevertheless, Zelenskyy signed the law.
