Mass protests erupt in Serbia amid clashes

On the evening of June 28, large-scale protests began in Belgrade, Serbia, involving students and the opposition, according to Blic.
Protesters took to the streets demanding early elections. The demonstration escalated into clashes with police, with tear gas and stun grenades being used.
Police blocked access via Knez Miloš Street to Pioneer Park and via King Milan Street to the Presidential Administration.
Security forces split the demonstrators into three groups and began pushing them back. At least two men were detained on King Alexander Boulevard.
Protesters threw pyrotechnics and other objects at the police and attempted to break through the police cordon. Detentions began.
Protests in Serbia
The large-scale protest is a continuation of anti-corruption demonstrations that have been ongoing since late last year. The movement was sparked by the collapse of a roof at the Novi Sad railway station, which resulted in 16 deaths.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić described the protests in Belgrade as "color revolutions."
In March 2025, Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin claimed that Russian intelligence services were helping to suppress the months-long anti-government demonstrations.
