Russia poses a threat to the security of Hungary and all of Europe, the leader of the Tisza Party and winner of Hungary’s parliamentary elections, Péter Magyar, said during a press conference.

Answering questions from journalists, he clarified that he was not referring to the Russian people, but to the state’s policy.

"We know Russians — and I’m not talking about the Russian people, Russian culture, or Russians themselves, they are wonderful people — I’m talking about the Russian bear and its role in Hungary’s history," Magyar said.

He added that Hungary is well aware of the potential risks and must act accordingly. According to him, Europe as a whole, as well as individual countries, "must prepare for this" and be ready to defend themselves.

Magyar’s stance on Russia

Following his election victory, Péter Magyar clearly outlined his position on relations with Russia. He said he would not initiate contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but would be ready to answer a potential call and use such a conversation to urge an end to the war against Ukraine.

At the same time, Magyar stressed that Hungary must maintain a pragmatic approach in its relations with Russia, given its geography and energy dependence.

According to him, abandoning Russian resources will take time, although diversification efforts should be intensified.

He also emphasized that he does not rule out talks with Putin, but excludes any political rapprochement. According to Magyar, even in the event of dialogue, there will be no talk of friendship.
