Magnetic storms warning: Why headaches and fatigue may hit harder than usual

Magnetic storms warning: Why headaches and fatigue may hit harder than usual Will magnetic storms affect Ukraine from January 9 to 12? (photo: Freepik)

From January 9 to 12, Earth will be under the influence of geomagnetic fluctuations — a natural phenomenon caused by changes in solar activity. Such disturbances can affect not only technology and communications, but also people’s well-being, especially those sensitive to environmental changes.

RBC-Ukraine explains when magnetic storms are expected during these days and how to prepare for possible symptoms.

Magnetic storm forecast from January 9 to 12

According to international space weather centers, geomagnetic activity will fluctuate in waves from January 9 to 12.

January 9, Friday – Elevated magnetic field activity is expected, with the Kp index possibly reaching levels corresponding to red-level geomagnetic storms (Kp 4-5, G1). This means magnetic fluctuations will be noticeable, but not extremely intense.

January 10, Saturday – Activity levels may remain elevated, with the Kp index staying within active (but not maximum storm) ranges.

January 11, Sunday – A temporary weakening of the magnetic storms is expected, with the geomagnetic field returning closer to its baseline level.

January 12, Monday – Activity may once again rise to active levels slightly above the baseline, but no strong storms are expected. A moderate storm at Kp 4 level is forecasted.

This forecast suggests periods of activity alternating with relatively calm phases. This is typical for the start of the year when the Sun is not in its peak flare phase, though periodic fluctuations in the magnetic field are possible.

What are magnetic storms and how do they affect us?

Magnetic storms are disturbances in Earth’s magnetic field caused by solar plasma ejections or solar wind flows. They can affect technical systems (communication, navigation) as well as human biorhythms.

Most sensitive reactions:

  • Cardiovascular system;

  • Nervous system;

  • Hormonal balance;

Who will feel the magnetic storms the most during these days?

At risk:

  • People sensitive to weather changes;

  • Those with hypertension and heart diseases;

  • Individuals with chronic headaches or sleep problems;

  • Elderly people;

  • Pregnant women;

Increased magnetic field activity can lead to fatigue, headaches, irritability, weakness, and sleep disturbances.

What should not be done during magnetic storms?

To avoid exacerbating symptoms, doctors recommend avoiding:

  • Excessive caffeine and alcohol;

  • Heavy physical exertion;

  • Psychological stress;

  • Overexertion and lack of sleep;

How to alleviate symptoms:

  • Ensure adequate sleep (at least 7-8 hours)

  • Maintain hydration

  • Walk in fresh air

  • Avoid sudden temperature changes

  • Follow your doctor’s advice if needed
