Magnetic storms hit late October: What you need to know and who's at risk

Magnetic storms hit late October: What you need to know and who's at risk Will magnetic storms affect Ukraine from October 24 to 27 (photo: Freepik)

The end of October promises relative stability in the Earth's magnetosphere, though minor fluctuations are still expected. According to NOAA and NASA, no major magnetic storms are forecasted from October 24 to 27; however, weather-sensitive individuals may experience mild discomfort due to changes in solar activity. Here's what scientists predict for magnetic storms at the end of October, who might be affected, and who should take extra care of their health.

Magnetic storm forecast for October 24-27

October 24, Friday: the geomagnetic situation is calm, with a K-index of 2-3. Solar activity is low, and no storms are expected.

October 25, Saturday: fluctuations may reach a K-index of 4, which could cause mild discomfort for weather-sensitive people.

October 26, Sunday: the magnetic field remains stable, with a K-index of 2-3. It's a good day for rest and travel.

October 27, Monday: moderate geomagnetic activity with a K-index of 3-4. A short wave of disturbances is possible, but without serious consequences for health or technology.

What a magnetic storm is

A magnetic storm is the Earth's magnetic field's reaction to powerful solar wind streams that follow solar flares. Its intensity is measured using the K-index (0-9) or the G-scale (G1-G5).

  • G1 (K-index 4-5) indicates a weak or moderate storm that can affect well-being, navigation, and radio communication.
  • G2 (K-index 6) and above mark stronger storms that may disrupt power grids.

How magnetic storms affect technology

During geomagnetic disturbances, GPS navigation, radio communication, and satellites may experience malfunctions. Power grids also face additional stress, though with the current low activity, no serious effects are expected.

How magnetic storms affect people

Even moderate storms can influence the well-being of sensitive individuals. Common symptoms include:

  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Blood pressure fluctuations
  • Irritability
  • Insomnia or drowsiness
  • Reduced concentration

Who is at risk

  • People with hypertension or heart conditions
  • Those with chronic illnesses
  • Weather-sensitive individuals
  • Older adults

During such days, the body may react even to slight changes in the magnetic field.

How to reduce the impact of magnetic storms

Doctors recommend during periods of increased solar activity:

  • Get at least 7-9 hours of sleep
  • Drink more water and herbal tea
  • Reduce coffee, alcohol, and energy drink intake
  • Avoid overexertion and stress
  • Spend more time outdoors
  • Monitor blood pressure and overall well-being

When to expect the next wave of storms

According to preliminary NOAA data, solar activity is expected to increase by the end of the month (after October 28) due to the emergence of new sunspots. This could lead to G1-G2 class storms in early November.
