Macron warns Iranian president against continuing to support Russia in war against Ukraine
French President Emmanuel Macron held talks with Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian, discussing topics including Russia's war against Ukraine, according to a statement from the Élysée Palace.
According to the Élysée Palace, Macron warned Pezeshkian against continuing support for Russia in the war against Ukraine.
The French leader also urged the Iranian president to play a role in preventing escalation between Israel and Lebanon by stopping support for "destabilizing players."
Macron added that Iran should halt the escalation of its nuclear program and adhere to the demands of international organizations.
Additionally, the French president stated that the release of three French hostages held by Iran is a prerequisite for improving relations between the two countries.
What preceded
Iran has been actively supporting Russia in the war against Ukraine. In particular, the country has provided Russia with Shahed drones, which are used almost daily to attack Ukraine's civilian infrastructure.
Despite this, the Iranian authorities continue to deny supplying weapons to Russia.
Recently, it was reported that the European Union has extended sanctions against Iran for one year due to its support for Russia in the war against Ukraine.
