French President Emmanuel Macron proposed to several European colleagues to resume dialogue with Russia, he said in an interview with Süddeutsche Zeitung.

According to the French leader, Russia's war against Ukraine has entered a new phase. He noted that "this war of attrition has entered its final stage," and losses on both sides give grounds to think about how to end the conflict.

In addition, Macron added that the United States has expressed readiness to help stop the war.

The French president explained his position as follows: "Do we want to delegate these discussions to others? Our geographical position will not change — whether we like Russia or not, it will remain here tomorrow as well."

According to him, France itself has already restored the discussion channel at the technical level. He stressed that dialogue between Europe and Russia is necessary.

"Would you like American ambassadors and representatives to negotiate the date of Ukraine's accession to the European Union on your behalf, on behalf of Europe? No, sorry. This is a matter of self-respect," Macron explained.

He noted that it is important to structure renewal of European discussions with Russia without putting pressure on Ukraine, while not depending on a third party.

As Macron explained, this is the reason why he "proposed to several European colleagues to resume such dialogue."

"For some, it was still too early to send their diplomatic advisers, as we did," the French president added.

Calls for dialogue with Putin

In December, Macron said Europe needs to restore contacts with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

After that, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said Paris has never ruled out dialogue with Russia, provided there is full transparency with Ukraine.

In response, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Putin is ready to hold dialogue with Macron.
