Macron reacts harshly to new Russian strikes on Kyiv

Russia must be held accountable for its crimes, while the European Union will step up sanctions on Moscow and increase military support for Ukraine, French President Emmanuel Macron wrote on X.
A new wave of terror against civilians
Macron said Russia had once again targeted civilians in Kyiv and its region with its latest attacks. He stressed that such a strategy is unacceptable.
"This policy of terror, carried out with missiles and drones, is unacceptable. Each new attack reinforces an obvious truth: Russia must pay the price for its aggression and answer for its crimes," the president wrote.
More support and tougher sanctions
The French president reaffirmed that Ukraine's Western partners will not scale back their support for the country. Instead, they will continue to increase military assistance and tighten sanctions on Russia.
"Alongside Ukraine, we will not yield to either fatigue or intimidation. The European Union and its partners will continue to increase the pressure on Russia, including through new sanctions, while strengthening military support for Ukraine so that it can defend itself and protect its population," he emphasized.
Aftermath of Russia's attack on Kyiv and the Kyiv region
Overnight on August 5, Russia launched another combined missile and drone attack on Kyiv and its region. The strikes sparked major fires at civilian sites, severely worsened air quality, and left people dead and injured.
In the capital, direct hits and falling debris set residential buildings, warehouses, and an office building ablaze across several districts.
The main wave of Russia's ballistic missile and drone attack targeted the Kyiv region, where major logistics hubs came under fire, including facilities operated by Epicentr, ROZETKA, and Nova Poshta.
Air quality in Kyiv has sharply deteriorated due to numerous fires at warehouse and industrial facilities, with monitoring stations recording "red" pollution levels in several districts.
