Macron gives EU advice after Trump's victory in US election
French President Emmanuel Macron offered advice to the European Union following the victory of Republican candidate Donald Trump in the US elections. The leader believes the time has come for a coordinated strategy, citing French government spokesperson Maud Bregeon.
Bregeon explained that Macron not only congratulated Trump on his election victory but also discussed the matter with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
"They know each other, having already worked together for four years, and the president (Macron) explained during this Council of Ministers meeting that it was not France’s role to comment on the choices of sovereign nations. However, a European strategic awakening was necessary," the spokesperson clarified.
She said that the president emphasized that France must raise its voice in Europe for greater sovereignty to preserve unity.
"Europeans need to take responsibility. What we do not accomplish for ourselves, no one else will. This concerns defense, trade, and agriculture. And the goal should not be a 'go it alone' approach, nor purely bilateral relations, but a coordinated European strategy," Macron was quoted by the spokesperson.
