Western countries have set a deadline for Russia to respond to the proposal for a 30-day ceasefire. If this does not happen, sanctions will be strengthened, stated French President Emmanuel Macron, Le Figaro reports.

"Today, I will speak with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and my European colleagues. We have set the framework, everything is clear," emphasized the French leader while commenting on the ultimatum to Russia.

He reminded that the Ukrainian President had agreed to an unconditional 30-day ceasefire with Russia after a proposal from the United States. Furthermore, on May 11, Zelenskyy expressed his readiness to hold talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Istanbul. This is the second time President Zelenskyy has "made significant concessions."

"Now, we must all be reasonable. Either Russia, Mr. Putin, is serious and wants peace, or it is not serious, and we must impose more sanctions," added Macron.

Russia's ultimatum

Earlier, German government representative Stefan Cornelius stressed that Russia must respond to the ceasefire proposal in Ukraine by the end of the day.

According to him, if Moscow rejects this proposal, Europe will begin preparations for sanctions.

In turn, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, reacting to such a statement, said that Russia does not accept ultimatums.

He reminded that Vladimir Putin is ready to resume talks with Ukraine in Istanbul.
