French President Emmanuel Macron mentioned Ukraine in his New Year’s speech, emphasizing Europe’s clear commitments to provide protection while also strengthening its own defense systems, according to his remarks in a televised address to the French people on December 31.

Macron stressed that Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine remains the main source of instability in Europe and has continued with particular intensity for nearly four years. In his view, the world is facing the return of imperial ambitions and the undermining of the international order, prompting European countries to reconsider their security policies.

The French leader also highlighted the importance of protecting the independence and freedoms of European states and advocated for the acceleration of European defense development. He noted that the process has already begun and is expected to gain new momentum in 2026.

Starting January 6, Paris will host a meeting of European and allied countries, during which, according to Macron, specific commitments will be made to support Ukraine and ensure a fair and lasting peace on the continent.

Macron also stated that France remains resilient thanks to strong institutions, an effective civil service, and powerful armed forces, which he described as among the most capable in Europe.

He outlined his New Year’s wishes for unity, strength, and independence, emphasizing that solidarity allows nations to overcome the most difficult challenges and confront threats.

Additionally, Macron assured that he will fulfill his duties as president until the end of his term in 2027 and will do everything possible to ensure that future presidential elections in France occur without any foreign interference. This address marked his ninth and penultimate New Year’s speech as head of state.

Macron also noted progress on security guarantees for Ukraine and said that in January, the contribution of each country in the Coalition of the Willing will be determined.
