Lukashenko registers as candidate for next presidential election in Belarus
The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus has registered Alexander Lukashenko as a presidential candidate, BELTA reports.
It is noted that from January 1 to January 25, 2025, election campaigning will continue in Belarus. The elections are scheduled for January 26.
Recently, Russian Ambassador to Belarus Boris Gryzlov said that Moscow is ready to "help" Minsk in case of "attempts to destabilize" the elections.
Protests in Belarus in 2020-2021
The mass protests in the Republic of Belarus that unfolded in 2020-2021 have become one of the most powerful manifestations of civil discontent in the country's history. They began after the presidential election on August 9, 2020. Official data declared Lukashenko the “winner” with more than 80% of the vote, but a significant part of society and international organizations claimed election fraud, accusing the authorities of large-scale violations.
Lukashenko's key opponent was Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the wife of blogger Syarhey Tsikhanouski, who was under arrest at the time of the election. Because her husband was not allowed to participate in the elections, Svetlana decided to run for office.
The protests were accompanied by brutal actions on the part of law enforcement agencies, which used violence, carried out mass arrests, and tortured detainees. This caused a wide resonance and condemnation of the international community.
