Lithuanian army commander admits possibility of sending peacekeepers to Ukraine
Commander-in-Chief of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Raimundas Vaikšnoras admits the possibility of sending peacekeepers to Ukraine. He believes that this issue should be discussed, according to LRT.
Vaikšnoras supported that Lithuania should also take responsibility for stability in Europe.
“If you ask whether Lithuania could (send troops to Ukraine - ed.), we will probably consider it. There will be a discussion, and I think we also have to take responsibility for stability in Europe,” the Lithuanian army commander said.
Peacekeepers for Ukraine
Discussions about the possible deployment of peacekeepers to Ukraine after the ceasefire have been going on for several months. France was the first to talk about this initiative.
Ukraine has discussed this issue not only with France, but also with Britain, Poland, and the Baltic states.
At the World Economic Forum in Davos, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the figure of 200,000 European peacekeepers needed to deter Russia in the future.
Later, the head of state clarified that there is no exact number of peacekeepers needed yet. According to him, a million-strong army is needed to maintain peace, and the number of peacekeeping troops depends on the size of the Ukrainian army.
