The Lithuanian government has been advised to terminate trade and economic cooperation agreements signed with Russia and Belarus two decades ago, states the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania.
The Ministry has prepared and published relevant draft resolutions. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, due to the ongoing military aggression of Russia and Belarus against Ukraine and the fact that cooperation with them is completely terminated and impossible, the agreements should be denounced.
“Following the adoption of the draft resolutions on denunciation, the governments of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus will be notified through diplomatic channels of the decision to terminate the agreements,” the ministry said.
The ministry does not expect any negative consequences from Lithuania’s unilateral termination of the agreements.
Which agreements are being discussed
The agreements in question include a treaty with Belarus signed in December 1994, and with Russia in November 1993 in Vilnius.
Additionally, bilateral commissions were established, with no meetings held with Russia since 2011, and with Belarus since 2015.

In early February, another package of military aid from Lithuania arrived in Ukraine.
Later, it became known that Lithuania and 20 other countries had signed an agreement to join the demining coalition in Ukraine.
Lithuania also stated that the European Union needs to at least strengthen sanctions against Russia following the death of Alexei Navalny.
