Lithuania to follow Latvia in banning entry of cars with Belarusian plates
Starting July 18, Lithuania will ban the entry of cars with Belarusian license plates. They will not be allowed to enter the territory of the European Union, according to Lithuania's customs.
“The ban on entry into the EU applies to passenger cars, regardless of the nationality of their owner or driver,” the statement says.
Only cars with diplomatic license plates will be allowed to enter the country. Cars already in the country must leave the country by January 18, 2025, otherwise, they will be confiscated.
In addition, the authorities are introducing a temporary exemption for cars not intended for sale owned by Belarusians with a valid residence permit or visa. They will be allowed to enter the country until August 16.
Sanctions against Belarus
Earlier, the European Council decided to extend sanctions against Belarus over its support for Russian aggression in Ukraine. The EU explained that this step is aimed at preventing the circumvention of sanctions imposed on Russia, given the close economic integration between the two countries.
Earlier, Latvia banned cars with Belarusian license plates from entering the country.
