Lithuania has decided to strengthen border security with Belarus. The reason is the joint Russian-Belarusian military exercise Zapad-2025, which will begin on Friday, September 12, according to a statement by the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service, reported by The Guardian.

As the border guards noted, "even more active border monitoring, patrols, and other border control measures" will be carried out in order to detect possible violations and provocations against Lithuania.

At the same time, Lithuania plans to closely coordinate its actions with other national and international partners.

Zapad-2025 exercises

The Russian-Belarusian military exercises Zapad-2025 will take place on Belarusian territory from September 12 to 16.

As Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin noted, the soldiers of the two countries will practice "scenarios of possible use of nuclear weapons," as well as draw up a plan for the use of the Russian medium-range ballistic missile Lishchyna, which the aggressor country has already used to strike Ukraine.

Such exercises cause concern among those NATO member states that share borders with Belarus.

In particular, Poland has already announced a decision to completely close the border with Belarus during the Zapad-2025 exercises.
