Umerov signs memorandum with Lithuanian defense minister on funding long-range weapons
During his visit to Vilnius, Ukraine’s Defense Minister Rustem Umerov signed a memorandum of understanding with Lithuanian Defense Minister Laurynas Kasčiūnas. The agreement outlines Lithuania’s funding of Ukrainian long-range drones.
"The memorandum on establishing a support mechanism for Ukraine’s security and defense forces through contributions to Ukraine’s defense industry opens new opportunities for Lithuanian investments in our defense sector and strengthens the strategic partnership between our nations," Umerov stated.
The minister emphasized that this is a long-term agreement, with the first tranche of €10 million already approved. The funds will be directed toward the production of Ukrainian long-range weaponry, including the Palianytsia project.
Umerov added that Lithuania is finalizing bureaucratic procedures to begin financing the initiative.
The ministers also discussed key priorities for 2025, including training and equipping Ukrainian brigades, providing ammunition and air defense systems, and expanding cooperation in defense industry development.
Background
Ukraine recently reached agreements with Denmark and Sweden on new investment models for its defense industry. Denmark introduced the "Danish model," where partners invest in Ukrainian weapons production in exchange for access to advanced military technologies. Sweden has also committed to funding Ukrainian long-range drone projects under this framework.
