After severe viral infections, many people expect a quick return to normal life. However, even after recovery, fatigue, weakness, and constant tiredness often remain.
Famous Ukrainian family doctor Liliia Sarakhman explained why the body can take a long time to recover and when this may be a warning sign.
Why does the body recovers slowly after viruses
According to the specialist, during flu or COVID, the body works at its limit, using enormous resources to fight the virus. That is why it needs time to return to normal balance.
Infections often leave muscles and the nervous system exhausted, disrupt sleep, reduce appetite, and limit physical activity. The immune system, energy metabolism, and nervous system all need to recover, but this process is never instantaneous.
“Weakness and fatigue during the post-viral period are normal. However, these symptoms should be monitored. It’s normal if they gradually decrease and you feel slightly better each week. It’s also important that no new symptoms appear,” explains Liliya Sarakhman.
The doctor emphasizes that the main sign of proper recovery is slow but steady improvement. If your condition does not improve or worsens, it may indicate complications.
Warning signs to watch for
Symptoms that require urgent attention include shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, fainting, fever, or a sudden drop in stamina even after light activity. In these cases, a doctor visit should not be delayed.
Doctors also advise against returning immediately to an intensive work or exercise routine. The body needs adequate sleep, balanced nutrition, and moderate physical activity. Excessive strain can prolong recovery.
Medical experts stress that lingering fatigue after viral infections is common, but ignoring your body’s signals can be dangerous.
