Simultaneous infection with multiple strains of the flu, or even a combination of flu and COVID-19, is possible, although it occurs rarely. Doctors call this condition co-infection, which can pose increased danger for certain patient groups, according to Ukrainian family doctor Liliia Sarakhman.

Can someone catch two viruses at once?

According to the specialist, a person can be infected with both influenza types A and B simultaneously. Such cases are more often recorded in children than in adults.

The main reason is the active circulation of both virus types and close contact within groups.

"We observe type A and B flu combinations more often in children. This usually occurs when both virus types circulate actively and when there are close contacts, especially in poorly ventilated indoor spaces," Sarakhman explained.

The doctor notes that co-infection usually does not show distinctly different symptoms compared to infection with a single virus, making it almost impossible to detect independently. Laboratory testing is required for confirmation.

"Tests will show positive results for both flu A and B, or for COVID-19 as well," she added.

A combination of COVID-19 and the flu

Doctors also allow for the possibility of flu and COVID-19 co-infection. While such cases are not widespread, they are concerning due to potential health consequences.

Co-infection is most dangerous for high-risk groups – elderly patients, people with chronic illnesses, and those with weakened immune systems. They face an increased risk of complications and severe illness, which may require longer treatment and medical supervision.

The doctor emphasizes that during seasonal peaks of illness, it is especially important to follow basic preventive measures – avoid crowded spaces, ventilate rooms regularly, wash hands, and stay home if cold symptoms appear.

Careful attention to your health and timely diagnosis helps reduce risks and prevent serious complications, even in the case of simultaneous infection with multiple viruses.
