'Let’s not walk into Russian traps' – EU High Representative after talks with US

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas spoke with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio after US-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia. Kallas urged caution against falling into Russian traps on her official X account.
"Russia will try to divide us. Let’s not walk into their traps," Kallas wrote.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy also emphasized that by working together with the United States, they can achieve a just and lasting peace on Ukraine’s terms.
Talks in Saudi Arabia
On February 18, US and Russian delegations held negotiations in Saudi Arabia. At a press conference following the meeting with the Russian side, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff described the talks as "very positive." According to him, the American side could not have imagined a better outcome.
Marco Rubio believes that to end Russia’s war against Ukraine, all parties must make compromises, and the peace terms must be acceptable to everyone. He outlined several conditions that must be met for progress in the negotiations, including:
- Reopening embassies in Moscow and Washington to facilitate technical and expert discussions,
- Establishing high-level teams with experts from both sides to define the parameters of how the war in Ukraine should end,
- Identifying possible ways to bring the conflict to an acceptable resolution.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called this meeting a discussion about Ukraine without Ukraine’s participation, stating that he will not recognize the results of these negotiations.
